Coccidioidomycosis was first described in Argentina in 1892 by Alexandro Posadas (4). Robert Wernecke confirmed the syndrome in the same year and, together with Posadas, discerned that the etiologic agent was infectious. Rixford and Gilchrist formally described the organism in California, and thinking the organism to be a coccidian protozoan, they named it Coccidioides immitis Rixford and Gilchrist 1896. In 1900, Ophuls and Moffitt recognized it to be a fungus (4).
