A survey of senior house officer posts in North East Thames region uncovered problems with workload, supervision, and education(1 2) similar to those described by others.(3) During the following years two important stages in the implementation of the ''New Deal'' on junior doctors' hours(4) were achieved. After two years we revisited the hospitals surveyed to discover what progress had been made and whether shorter working hours had affected training.
