SPS Fabrication of ZrB2-SiC Ceramics Toughened by Zr2Al4C5 Compounds and Evaluation of Their Properties

摘要
The ZrB2/SiC/Zr2Al4C5 multi-phase ceramics with different volume contents of Zr2Al4C5 were synthesized by SPS at 1800 degrees C and 20 MPa. The adding of Zr2Al4C5 improves sintering properties and inhibits the coarsening of grains. The fracture toughness of ZrB2/SiC/Zr2Al4C5 multiphase ceramics with 30 vol% Zr2Al4C5 is 4.81 MPa.m(1/2), which is 20% higher than the ZrB2/SiC multiphase ceramic. The fracture mode exhibits a mixture of inter- and intra-granular fracture and the toughening mechanisms are the presence of laminated ZrxAlyCz. grains toughening, crack deflection and crack bridging.
