Although the preponderance of evidence has failed to demonstrate a significant relation between cholesterol and risk of stroke, hepatic hydroxymethylglutaryl coenzyme A reductase inhibitors have been shown to be neuroprotective. This benefit may be independent of cholesterol lowering.
