Many attempts have been made for obtaining an "objective" audiogram based on physiological methods. Multiple auditory steady state evoked responses (MASTER) represents one of them and they have been used for obtaining frequency-specific auditory thresholds during the last years. The aim of this study is to present our clinical experience with this technique in normal hearing children. Ten children, aged from 1 1/2 to 3 years, underwent a complete audiological evaluation for hearing threshold determination, including MASTER. The results showed that frequency specific thresholds assessed by MASTER correlated well the results of the other physiologic and behavioral tests. Our findings indicate that MASTER can give a reliable and "objective audiogram"; however, more experience and long term follow-up are necessary in both normal and hearing impaired children in order to draw definitive conclusions.
