Israel - The dominance of the external: Israeli sociology

The structure and discourse of Israeli sociology is outward oriented. A number of Israeli sociologists are working increasingly on local topics, using a variety of theories. These sociologists use paradigms and methodologies prevalent on the world market and, consequently, enable local sociologists to compete in the international academic market. The major advantage of this orientation is the prevention of parochialization and esoteric studies. The major drawback is that it prevents the creation of a strong local community of scholars and lowers the prospect of local sociologists taking risks by developing innovative methodologies and paradigms.
