摘要
Purpose: The diagnosis of cancer very often has a negative impact on roles within a family and the lifestyle of the family involved. These changes can lead to dramatic alterations in the smooth day-to-day running of the household, especially for those family members who have to learn to adapt in order to cope with this specific form of illness. Our investigation focused primarily on determining the extent to which stress factors linked to breast cancer affect the partnership status as well as on the extent to which these changes affect the well-being of both partners following the diagnosis of cancer and the proposed method of therapy. Material and Methods: Using data from 108 breast cancer patients, the quality and status of changes within the partnership after breast cancer diagnosis were evaluated. Results: The majority of women with cancer were either in a partnership or married. 10% of the women admitted to a change in partnership status in the first 12 months following the diagnosis. However, several patients reported a tendency towards a more positive development in an existing partnership or a new partnership. Conclusion: The stress factors resulting from a cancer diagnosis and the ensuing treatment do not necessarily lead to strains or Undue tension in relationships. It is recommended that couples have a psychosomatic consultation to clarify the illness and the subsequent therapy.
