Comparative Study of Plastics as Propellants for Laser Ablation Plasma Thrusters

摘要
A comparative study was conducted to analyze laser ablation propulsion (LAP) parameters of plastics. These LAP parameters included specific impulse and coupling coefficient obtained while ablating different prospective plastic materials. The tests involved a medium-low energy pulsed laser along with a free-moving ballistic pendulum with a target pasted on it. The displacement measurements were performed by the noncontact optical triangulation with a laser in a novel application of 2- D position sensitive detectors (PSDs) in LAP. The use of the displacement measurements gave the advantages of detecting any unwanted lateral movement of the pendulum. Data analysis showed that ablation of PVC had produced the maximum deflections. Displacements were also measured in small intervals and the velocity of the pendulum was estimated.
