In this study, the performance of anode supported solid oxide fuel cells (ASC) operated with biogas derived from corn silage (biogas) is analyzed. The fuel gas is produced by supercritical water gasification at the pilot plant VERENA operated at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology. Current voltage characteristics show a slightly (6-14%) lower power density during biogas operation compared to hydrogen fueled SOFC single cells. Impedance analysis reveals an increased activation polarization resistance and an additional polarization process at frequencies below 2 Hz during biogas operation. These two effects contribute to an overall higher polarization resistance of the biogas fueled ASC resulting in a lower power output.
