Magneto-optic characteristics of ferric oxide quantum-dot-phosphate glass nanocomposite

A phosphate-based glass was embedded with ferric oxide (Fe2O3) quantum dots in an effort to significantly enhance the magneto-optic properties of the glass. The phosphate glass was prepared with a composition 63P(2)O(5)15.5K(2)O10ZnO6Na(2)O5.5BaO and doped with naked nanostructured Fe2O3 varying from 0.25 to 2%. The optical band gap of these glasses was observed to have reduced with an increasing in the concentration of Fe2O3. A maximum increase in Verdet constant of approximately 17 times that in a plain phosphate glass was observed at a wavelength of 632.8 nm, for an Fe2O3 doping concentration of 1% in the host glass. Preliminary measurements show that the resulting composite exhibits good enhancement in the Verdet constant and will have application in magneto-optical devices.
