摘要
The paper summarizes an introductory talk for the symposium on single molecule spectroscopy (SMS) at ICL'99. The first part gives a brief introduction on the general advantages of SMS for the study of inhomogeneous and complex systems, that may be exploited in various scientific fields. The second part reports work from the authors' group on the application of SMS to nonlinear and quantum optics. We briefly describe a triggered source of single photons based on rapid adiabatic passage through resonance of a single molecule in a laser field. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.
