Spherical, sub-micrometre Y2O3:Eu3+ and cubic (Y2-(x+y)Gdx)O-3:Eu-y(3+) (where x = 0.02-0.40, y = 0.04) phosphor particles have been synthesized by a novel homogeneous precipitation method. These cubic-Y2O3:Eu spherical phosphor particles (ca. 300 nm) will be ideal for FED devices as they can densely close-pack on screens (as shown herein) and they display high luminous efficiency under low-voltage electron beam excitation. It is also shown herein that these particles are useful in voltage ranges up to 5000 V and perform well at such voltages. (c) 2006 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
