Simulation of the structure of turbulent flow around an obstacle with sharp edges in a flat channel: Numerical simulation results

The results are given of numerical simulation of turbulent flow in the vicinity of a square obstacle in a channel, based on both algebraic and differential models of Reynolds stresses. It is demonstrated that, by and large, the measurement data are better reproduced by the model of turbulence including differential transport equations for all components of the tensor of Reynolds stresses. The nonlinear algebraic model of normal turbulent stresses gives adequate agreement with experiment for the turbulence energy level, as distinct from the linear model with isotropic turbulent viscosity, which leads to negative nonphysical values of horizontal intensity of turbulence.
