Pre-Permian of the north-east German Basin

The pre-Permian section of the north-east German Basin is described. The incomplete record begins with a Cambrian elastic succession which is overlain by Middle Ordovician rift-related sediments. A more complete Devonian mixed elastic-carbonate section detailing the development of reefs and interdigitated mini-basins is unconformably succeeded by the Tournaisian units, where reefal development became dominant. During the Visean the sedimentation pattern once again became more mixed with a distinct cessation at the end of the Visean. The Upper Carboniferous continental elastic succession is extensive and is intruded and overlain by the intrusive and extrusive magmatic episode which commenced during the Stephanian and is associated with the formation and development of the north-east German Permian basin.
