In this article, we investigated the prevalence and type distribution of human papillomavirus (HPV) in female cervical adenocarcinoma patients in eastern China (mainly in Jiangsu Province). Tissue samples of a total of 202 cases with eight kinds of cervical adenocarcinomas, including 162 cases of common adenocarcinoma, 15 cases of clear cell adenocarcinoma, 11 cases of endometrioid adenocarcinoma, 7 cases of villoglandular adenocarcinoma, 3 cases of serous adenocarcinoma, 2 cases of mucinous endocervical adenocarcinoma, 1 case of mucinous signet-ring cell adenocarcinoma and 1 case of mesonephric adenocarcinoma, were obtained from female patients undergoing biopsy or surgery. HPV DNA and genotype of all subjects were examined using polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and gene-chip. There were 131 positive cases among 202 cervical adenocarcinoma tissue samples with the total HPV infection rate of 64.85%. The HPV infection rate of single type was 40.59%. The predominant types of single infection with HPV were HPV 16 (19.80%) and HPV 18 (17.33%). The HPV infection rate of multiple types was 24.26%. The predominant types of multiple infection with HPV were HPV 16+ 18 (22.45%) HPV16+ 58 (6.12%), HPV16+ 18+ 31+ 33+ 52 (6.12%), and HPV16+ 18+ 31+ 33+ 58 (6.12%). Several common kinds of cervical adenocarcinomas had a close relationship with HPV infection. HPV 16, 18, 31, 33, 52, 58, 45 and 35 with high prevalence in the cervical adenocarcinomas deserved great attention in eastern China area (mainly in Jiangsu Province).
