Characterization of Confined Intact and Damaged Borosilicate Glass

This article describes two different techniques utilized to characterize intact and damaged borosilicate glass at pressures up to similar to 2 GPa: triaxial compression and confined sleeve. The results of the characterization experiments-for intact and damaged glass as a function of confinement pressure-are described; the results are interpreted in terms of two pressure-dependent constitutive models: Drucker-Prager and Mohr-Coulomb (MC). The MC model is successful at predicting the damage pattern. An observation is that the slopes of the two models appear to be independent of the degree of damage (intact, predamaged, and severely damaged specimens). Lastly, these data are compared with flyer-plate impact data of intact and damaged glass.
