Synthesis and characterization of side-chain liquid crystalline polymers bearing para-methoxyphenyloxycarbonylazobenzene group

摘要
The synthesis and free radical polymerization of the novel methacrylate monomer containing para-methoxyphenyloxycarbonylazobenzene group (AZO2) and the methacrylate monomer containing para-methoxyphenyloxycarbonylbenzene group ( MAPB2) are described. The novel azo monomer and the polymers were characterized by H-1-NMR, IR, UV-Vis, elemental analysis, GPC, TG-DTA, POM and X-ray diffraction techniques. The polymers obtained from the copolymerization of AZO2 and MAPB2 are proved to be random copolymers and all of the polymers show relatively good thermal stability. In addition, the azo monomer and the polymers exhibit nematic liquid crystalline textures and the temperature range of liquid crystalline behavior of the polymers broadens with increasing the azo content of the polymers.
