DETERMINATION OF FENBENDAZOLE IN ADULT ARTEMIA USING REVERSE-PHASE LIQUID CHROMATOGRAPHY

A new HPLC procedure for the determination of fenbendazole, a benzimidazole, in adult Artemia (live brine shrimp) has been developed and validated. Following a liquid extraction using ethyl acetate, samples were separated by reversed-phase HPLC on a Sunfire C-18 column and quantified using UV detection at 215 nm. The mobile phase was a mixture of 37.5 mM potassium dihydrogen phosphate pH 3.75 and acetonitrile, with a flow-rate of 0.9 mL/min. The procedure produced a linear curve over the concentration range of 100-5000 mu g/gm with a lower limit of quantification of 1 mu g/gm. Intra- and inter-assay variability was less than 8%. The development of the assay allowed the determination of fenbendazole in a live brine shrimp feeding study.
