Escherichia coli O157:H7 can cause severe epidemic, sporadic, and human diseases. Humans of all ages can be infected, and gastroenterologists frequently are involved in the management of such patients. Antibiotics, antimotility agents, and opioid narcotics should be avoided, and infected patients should be reported to the appropriate public health officers as a matter of urgency.
