The quantative scales and models, to describe the solvent polarity on chemical reactivity and physical properties of compounds, in condensed media were developed. The different individual solvent scales, based on empirical parameters were developed using pure solvents. Different alternatives were proposed to measure solute-solvent interactions, resulting in a large variety of 'solvent polarity scales' based on diverse solvent-sensitive reference processes/empirical parameters. The multiparameter approaches to explain solvent effects on chemical and physical properties were proposed. The position and potential for the development of solvent polarity were also presented.
