The experiences of parents with children with disabilities travelling on planes: An exploratory study

Research into air travel for people with disabilities and complex care issues has seldom been investigated, with no research data that focusses solely on children. Qualitative interviews of a semi structured nature were carried out with seven parents of children with disabilities, who discussed their experiences as a parent and primary caregiver. There were multiple issues identified that are related to the design of the aircraft or the processes involved in the service. These included physical issues such as manual handling and accessing the toilet facilities; emotional issues including being separated from their wheelchair and the loss of dignity; and cognitive issues such as preparation for travel. Recommendations include access to suitable toilet facilities and a redesign of processes concerning seating on board the aircraft.
