摘要
Desalination is the most energy-intensive form of water supply. Chemical engineering makes desalination more affordable. The dissolved organic matter and other impurities of brackish water or sea water is pre-filtered and then forced under pressure, which separates salts from the water. Forward osmosis reduces brine discharge. Desalination mitigates the problem of water shortages.
