The prevalence of child abuse and neglect: a survey of young people

Child maltreatment is a highly controversial area of social policy, but little is known about its prevalence in the general population. This paper explains why the NSPCC commissioned a national survey, discusses the ethical and methodological issues that researchers faced, describes findings and considers the implications for child protection policy.
