We introduce and present the proceedings of the conference "Work, dissipation, and fluctuations in nonequilibrium physics" held in Brussels, 22-25 March 2006 under the auspices of the International Solvay Institutes for Physics and Chemistry and organized by the Center for Nonlinear Phenomena and Complex Systems of the Universite Libre de Bruxelles.
