The Effects of Molten Salts on the Formation of Mullite Whiskers

摘要
Mullite whiskers were synthesized from the reaction of aluminum sulfate and silica in molten slats of NaCl, KCl, Na2SO4 and K2SO4 at 1000 degrees C for 3 h. The amount of the mullite products from the molten KCl was higher than that from the molten NaCl. High purity mullite was obtained in use of the Na2SO4 and K2SO4 melts. The morphology of the mullite whiskers changed in the different melts. The effects of the molten salt media on the morphology of the mullite whiskers were discussed. The sorts of the molten salt are the key factors influencing the synthesis of the mullite whiskers.
