Micellar catalysis - Effect of sodium lauryl sulphate in the oxidation of cyclopentanol by chromic acid

摘要
Cyclopentanol oxidation by Cr-IV in presence and absence of sodium lauryl sulphate (NaLS) is first order in both the reactants. However, the acid dependence changes from a mixed order in absence of NaLS to pure second order in presence of NaLS. The oxidation rate decreases monotonically with [NaLS] above critical micellar concentration. The observation has been rationalised in the light of both Menger-Portnoy model as well as Berezin's model. One of the reactants, viz. Cr-VI is partitioned between the micellar and aqueous phase.
