The restless legs syndrome

The restless legs syndrome (RLS) is a common disease with a prevalence of 2-10 %. An imperative desire to move lower limbs because of paraesthesias, dysaesthesias, or pain is typical. Symptoms mainly occur at rest predominantly in the evening or during sleep and are temporarily relieved by activity. Therefore patients with RLS often have problems with initiating and maintaining sleep. In polysomnographic investigations, typical periodic limb movements in sleep (PLMS) can be found. Pharmaco-therapy should be started if the well-being of the patient is restricted. Levodopa and dopamine agonists are regarded as the treatment of choice for restless legs syndrome.
