Management of Pregnancy with Abnormal Umbilical Cord Insertion

The umbilical cord is adnexa that connects the placenta to the foetus. Although pathologic placenta is the most important foetal adnexa cause of adverse perinatal outcome, recent studies show that the umbilical cord has just as an important role in the wellbeing of the foetus as well as the in the outcome of the birth. We present the case of a 30 years gravida I, para I with 41 weeks of gestation that presented on her 20 weeks scan marginal insertion of the umbilical cord. The patient gave birth to a 3980 grams male baby. No foetal distress sighs were seen during labour and at birth. Despite the fact that in our case the birth was uneventful, abnormal cord insertion can have serious consequences on the wellbeing of the foetus. All mothers diagnosed with this pathology should be classified as high-risk pregnancies, and follow up should be done accordingly.
