Non-coding RNA in apicomplexan parasites

In recent years it has became evident that the transcriptome of most species has little protein-coding capacity and that the abundance of non-coding RNA was previously overlooked. Non-coding RNAs were initially thought to be transcriptional noise, however, a growing number of studies is showing that many of these RNAs have important regulatory functions.
