Production of amylases (dextrinizing and saccharifying) by Rhodopseudomonas plaustris, Rhodobacter sphaeroides, Rhodocyclus gelatinosus and Rhodocyclus tenuis in different synthetic media was investigated. Rc. gelatinosus secreted maximum amount of dextrinizing amylases in medium containing starch which suggests its adaptive nature, while Rb. sphaeroides secrete maximum saccharifying amylase. No positive correlation was observed between amylase production and vegetative growth as well as pH of the media and enzyme activity.
