A multilayer approach to high adhesion diamond-like carbon coatings on titanium

Diamond-like carbon (DLC) has been a candidate biocompatible coating for several years, due to its excellent physical and chemical properties, and its biocompatibility. However, adhesion to a number of candidate prosthetic materials is still an issue. In this paper we report on a multilayer approach involving the coating of commercially pure titanium with TiNx-TiCy-DLC, using r.f. reactive sputtering in the case of TiNx and TiCy, and r.f. plasma assisted chemical vapour deposition in the case of DLC. The effects of varying the processing conditions for each layer, on their properties, are discussed and a set of optimum coating conditions reported. (C) 1997 Elsevier Science S.A.
