摘要
Popular violence, at the center of public attention, incited journalists and pamphleteers to express themselves about the attitude of the authorities on this matter. The proclamation of martial law on 21 October 1789 generated a host of questions and opinions. Whether regarded as necessary or illegitimate, the law was examined in its essentials, its application, and it led to a confrontation of different revolutionary principles. The source of varied criticism towards the authorities, even towards the Revolution itself, the decree on martial law revealed the fragile balance of a society in the making. Largely the product of the representation of violence, this law captured the attention of writers, notably on 17 July 1791 and on 20 June 1792. Proclaimed - or not - by the municipalities, the law prompted questions, opinions, and changes.
