We explore the modulational instability and existence of dark, bright solitary wave solutions in negative index materials (NIMs) modeled by generalized nonlinear Schrodinger equation with competing c ubic-quiritic and higher-order nonlinearities with dispersive permittivity and permeability. Parameter domains are delineated in which these ultrashort pulses exist in NIMs. Unlike the ordinary materials, these novel excitations occur for different signs of dispersion, Kerr and non-Kerr nonlinearities.
