Caveolin-1 - a protein implicated in cellular cholesterol homeostasis

摘要
We studied the distribution of caveolin-1 in cell membranes and how caveolin-1 accesses lipid droplets from the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) in vascular smooth muscle cells (SMC) using freeze-fracture immunocytochemistry. We found caveolin-1 in the cytoplasmic leaflet of the plasma membrane, but surprisingly exclusively in the endoplasmic leaflet of all intracellular membranes. Furthermore, we localized caveolin-1 in notable amounts both on the surface and within the cores of lipid droplets.
