A brief review of non-native freshwater fishes in Slovenia

Since 1891, 16 fish species have been introduced, either intentionally or accidentally, to the inland waters of Slovenia, beginning with the introduction of rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss. In this paper, we summarize information on the introduction of each non-native fish species, including the year of introduction to Slovenia, the reason for their introduction, the mode of recent expansion, the degree of acclimatization, potential impacts on the native fishes and the area of recent distribution. The most abundant and widely spread species is rainbow trout, which occupies more than 51% of Slovene territory.
