摘要
In this conceptual review, the authors critique the unitary concept of "major depressive disorder" (MDD) and identify four major subtypes: neurotic, mixed, melancholic, and pure depression. The biopsychosocial model is critiqued as leading to an extreme eclecticism which has led to a simplistic acceptance of the unitary view of MDD with little scientific solidity. An alternative to biopsychosocial eclecticism, based on medical humanism, is proposed. The authors advocate a return to careful psychopathology as the basis of all nosology.
