Characterization of TiO2/polyelectrolyte thin film fabricated by a layer-by-layer self-assembly method

Multilayers thin films consisted of TiO2 nanoparticles and oppositely charged polyelectrolytes were fabricated by layer-by-layer self-assembly method and their properties were characterized. At pH 2.0, TiO2 nanoparticles were maximally deposited with poly(sodium 4-styrenesulfonate) (PSS) and the thickness and the surface roughness of film assembled with poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) were largest because of the loopy structure of PAA in acidic solution. On the other hand, the thin film prepared with poly(vinyisulfonic acid-sodium salt) (PVS) showed the high deposition of TiO2, lowest surface roughness, high refractive index (n = 2.1) at 632 nm, and high transmittance in visible range. In addition, this film. composed of anatase nanoparticles showed good photocatalytic property by decomposing methyl orange molecules with UV irradiation.
