HIV/AIDS and pre-eclampsia are very important diseases in developing countries. There is uncertainty as to whether HIV lowers the rate of pre-eclampsia. As existing studies are either small or retrospective, there exists the need for a prospective study of sufficient size to bring clarity to this matter. (C) 2007 Elsevier Ireland Ltd.
