A modified procedure for preparation of ion-paired horseradish peroxidase (HRP) in isooctane was presented. The enzymatic system contained less than 0.1% v/v water providing good solubility for hydrophobic phenols. Tert-butyl hyperperoxide was used as the oxidant for HRP-catalyzed polymerization of phenol. The analysis show that the polymerization of 4-hexyloxyphenol with ion-paired HRP in organic solvent resulted in a product mainly containing quinonoid segments.
