The open source Eclipse Project was conceived in the late 1990s by a small group of IBM engineers as a way to standardize development platforms across the company. To date, the project has expanded well beyond its original core technology of a Java integrated development environment (IDE) to include approved projects or proposals for data tool development, embedded-device tool development, among others.
