The developments in the area of photocatalytic TiO2 coatings are discussed. The uses of TiO2 photocatalytic coatings include its use on glass in both commercial and residential windows. The use of TiO2 photoactive surfaces to disinfect, which is to cause cell death, has proven the TiO2 photoactive coating technology to be an extremely effective disinfectant. It precedes without any disinfection byproducts such as those produced by chlorine bleach, thus avoiding any concerns with toxicity and mutagenesis. Ecoactive Surfaces has introduced its new product, Oxititan, a photocatalytic TiO2 material, which is able to achieve a more active state in lower UV conditions. One of the major challenges in the area is to create applications for photocatalytic TiO2 where the performance can be easily described to the customer.
