摘要
This paper presents different models for developing prototyping and product development centers across the United States. Different types of centers, their business drivers and a possible framework for a successful center within an academic engineering environment are described. Sample case studies are detailed. Further the academic rationale for developing and establishing "new product development" based centers, and "product realization" as a core area of competence within the engineering body of knowledge is presented.
