Liquid-crystalline phase in vitreous lithium acetate

摘要
The structural transitions in anhydrous lithium acetate are studied by polarization microscopy, X-ray powder diffraction analysis, and IR spectroscopy in the temperature range below the glass transition point. It is shown that the heating of vitreous acetate results in the formation of structures similar to mesophases of liquid crystals. The enthalpy of the glass-mesophase transition is estimated at about 100 cal/mol.
