During the initial phase of the research and development activities (R&D) when it is necessary to define the objectives, the tasks, the criteria for the evaluation of the results and the project-term elements, as well as the basic parameters of the project costs, the high quality information should be secured for the creation of the new technical solutions in global relations, which will result from one's own inventive work and which solutions shall be applicable in industry. Particularly these three mentioned criteria have been met by any protected invention in any segment of the technical field, which is called the "patent". Usually, the patents have mostly not resulted of the R&D activities, but of the personal success of an inventor. However it is an imperative to use in particular the patent information of the technique-technology achievements in the specific technical fields, because 80 percent of such information has not been published anywhere else. Should the best solutions of the patent information be applied in every R&D project, the probability is greater to surpass them and the eventual infringement of already protected intellectual property rights might be avoided. The State Intellectual Property Office of the Republic of Croatia offers to the public the usage of its abundant funds of the specific up-to-date information and under very acceptable terms: the CD-ROM collections, various publications, on-line databases and the specialist advice of the intellectual property protection related to various fields of technology. The use of such information should contribute to the quality and protection enhancement of the results of any R&D project in the Republic of Croatia. The subject matter of one patent application related to the scientific field has been shown as an example relating to the usage of patent information in the purpose of the R&D activity.
