Web-based Simulation is the application of the Web technology to simulation. In this paper, an overview is introduced of existing literature on Web-based Simulation. Two main areas are covered: Web-enabled Simulation Environment (WSE) and Web-enabled Distributed Interactive Simulation (WDIS). WSE is based on the sharing and reuse of simulation models and tools available over the Web. WDIS is the extension of the Distributed Interactive Simulation (DIS) standard to Web-based network infrastructures. Existing approaches and application examples are provided. A taxonomy of WDIS systems is also introduced.
