Analysis of noncovalent complexes of DNA and RNA by mass spectrometry

Previously, it was shown that a noncovalent complex between FK binding protein and the ligand FK506 could be transported intact from solution into the gas phase using electrospray ionization (ESI) and detected using mass spectrometry (MS). This review highlights the power of ESI-MS for characterization of noncovalent complexes of nucleic acids. These include DNA and RNA duplexes, triplexes and quadruplexes, interaction of DNA and RNA with proteins, and complexes between nucleic acids and small molecule ligands.
