摘要
Although there have been many seasonality studies of shellfish from archaeological sites, a technique for understanding season of death of Ostrea edulis has never been attained. A methodology was achieved through thin sectioning shells from a large modern control sample collected from different locations and environments. It was found that annual lines were formed in March and April. Measuring increments was not a feasible technique for interpreting month of death so seasonal changes in the microstructure were noted instead. A blind test was carried out showing that overall 91% of assessments were correct +/- 1 month. A second blind test by a student showed the technique may be learnt but that a large time investment is needed.
