Study on compound layer formed during plasma nitrocarburizing of AISI 5140 steel

摘要
A series of experiments were carried out to investigate the plasma nitrocarburizing response of AISI 5140 steel. The specimens were normalized at 850°C for 30 min, and then were cooled in air. After cleaning with alcohol, the specimens were placed into the plasma nitrocarburizing chamber, which was evacuated to 2.5 Pa. The diffusion layer and the surface hardness were measured by using a Buhler 1600-4980T instrument at a constant load of 50 g and a loading time of 15 s. The nitrocarburized surfaces were examined using X-ray and SEM.
