ARE WE LIVING IN AN ERA OF NIHILISM? JEAN-LUC MARION AND READING THE SIGNS OF THE TIMES

This article critiques Jean-Luc Marion's understanding of nihilism based on its inconsistency with his own theological convictions. It contextualises Marion's account of nihilism within his relatively precise theological and philosophical critique of the modern subject. Then, it identifies how he broadens his philosophical account by relating it to an interpretation of culture. Finally, the article argues that Marion overextends the applicability of the concept in a way that is inconsistent with his overall theological position and further nuance is needed in order to read the signs of the times.
