The effect of strain path on the critical strain for serrated flow in solution treated AA6082

In solution treated AA6082 Al-Mg-Si, serrated flow occurred after a certain critical strain in proportional deformation. However, it disappeared after a change in strain path even when the amount of prestrain was much greater than the critical strain in proportional deformation. The critical strain in the second stage of deformation after a path change depended on the path change angle and the amount of prestrain. There was no correlation with specimen geometry or strain hardening rate, and the effect is likely to be due to an effect of the path change on strain rate sensitivity of flow stress or strain hardening, or both.
